Ok. For this practical 2, we were supposed to identify and compare the different types of websites. We were asked to search for 4 different types of websites based on the topic that we selected. In my case, it was 2-factor authentication in the banking industry.
My findings were: http://2factor.blogspot.com/ for personal websites, http://www.portwise.com/solutions/industry/finance_banking.php for organisational websites, http://searchsecurity.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid14_gci968784,00.html for subject-based/personal websites and lastly http://www.dsssasia.com/htmdocs/products/a_server/a_server_overview.htm for organizational and subject based websites.
For the first link, the owner uses a blog to publish his views on the 2-factor authentication. He feels that the 2 factor authentication is inadequate as the data that can be typed in can be easily stolen from the user.
The 2nd link was about a website that promotes its solutions to help banking and finance industry to eliminate fraud, leaving no traces for malicious attackers and ensuring a systematic log to see when the users are using the bank’s services.
The 3rd link relates to a subject based website that facilitates sharing of information on 2 factor authentication. The author believes that in actual fact, the tokens and smartcards don’t offer security unless vendors fix the issue of password store in plain text and provide a method for controlling safe mode boot up.
The 4th link is a website that gives an overview of the model of their organization providing authentication to client. They also mentioned their product description and how they apply it in reality.
These links really gave me plenty of information and how to classify the different websites. As there are different types of websites, the information offered by each source will be different and will be from various viewpoints and stands. Personal websites offer information from the view of individuals based on their intuition and experience whereas organizational websites try to show the advantages on their products for business reasons while subject based website are data driven and usually based their results on statistic and results.
This research will in fact be of use to me as I can apply what I have learnt and picked up from UIR to other subjects that I am and will be taking, even at work in the future.
Besides being educational, this practical was also pretty fun and interesting as I had no idea that there were so many categories of websites in advance. It was fun trying to identify and classify the websites according to their types and I have found out that some websites also overlap in terms of types of websites (eg. subject-based/personal).
